Leader of What? Rethinking Leadership Through Self-Investment
April 3, 2025“I’ve never really thought about it like that.”
It’s a response I hear often when I ask athletes or people who train consistently to reflect on how they actually see themselves.
Are you an athlete? A high performer? Or are you someone who simply trains?
The reason this matters isn’t about putting a label on yourself — it’s about the impact that identity has on your behavior. When you begin to think of yourself as a performer, you start to take ownership of the habits and standards that come with that identity. You become more intentional about your preparation, more protective of your recovery, and more selective with your time and energy.
Performers don’t compromise the things that matter most — not because they’re perfect, but because they understand that their daily actions are connected to something bigger. They’re not swayed by what others think or doing what’s easiest in the moment. They operate with clarity.
And clarity is a game-changer.
Recently, I sat down with a young athlete in a 1:1 session. She trains nine times a week — double sessions some days, high intensity, big commitment. But when we explored her nutrition, something didn’t match up. Her meals were healthy, but not tailored to her goals or her workload.
Then I asked her to describe the eating habits of her close friends, none of whom are athletes. She paused, thought about it, and admitted that her own choices weren’t all that different — a few extra snacks here and there, but otherwise quite similar.
That was a lightbulb moment.
She saw the gap. The energy she was putting out was vastly different from her friends, yet the fuel she was putting in wasn’t. That recognition is important — but here’s the real point: seeing the gap is only the first step.
Closing the gap takes maturity, reflection, and patience. It takes time to change. Because change isn’t just about knowing what to do — it’s about seeing yourself differently. When you shift your identity, you shift your standards. That’s when things start to fall into place.
In recent work I’ve done with high performers — from elite athletes to leaders in business — the same pattern emerges: when people connect their identity to their performance, consistent action becomes far more achievable.
You don’t have to fake motivation or rely on willpower. You simply act in alignment with the person you’re trying to become.
This is why I always encourage people to go deeper than surface-level goals. Instead of asking, What do I want to achieve? try asking, Who do I want to be? And then follow that with, How does that person live? How do they train? How do they recover, sleep, eat, and think?
That framing changes everything. It brings intention to the day-to-day. It turns a performance vision into a lifestyle, not just a wish.
In our work, we help people design lifestyles that support their performance. That means building structure — getting adequate sleep, eating enough protein in the morning, fueling consistently throughout the day, managing stress, having a plan, and sticking to it. Not in a rigid way, but in a way that’s practical, progressive, and personal.
When that structure is built around identity — not just information — the changes become sustainable. That next level of performance starts to feel possible, because you’re no longer chasing it from the outside. You’re living it from the inside out.
That’s exactly what we focus on inside Inner Circle — helping people build the structure, habits, and mindset that align with the identity they want to live out. You’ll have the full support of our community, the daveynutrition team, and a system built to help you grow into the person you want to be. It’s not about rigid meal plans or unrealistic expectations— it’s about becoming the kind of person who consistently shows up, performs, and grows. Whether you’re an athlete or someone aiming to operate at a higher level in life, Inner Circle is designed to support that transformation from the inside out.
So if you’ve never really thought about it like that — maybe now’s the time & Inner Circle is the perfect place to start
