This smoothie bowl would make for a great breakfast on rest days or light activity days when carbohydrate requirements are lower but protein intake remains essential, such as for the growth and repair of muscle cells.
Health Benefits
Beetroot is a great source of many nutrients, namingly Vitamin C, folic acid, potassium and nitrates. Spinach is also a source of these nutrients. The body can convert nitrates to nitric oxide. Potassium and nitric oxide may contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.
Expert Tips
Serve this smoothie bowl immediately and add a dash more milk or water if needed to move the ingredients in the food processor and allow it to blitz.Leave out the beetroot and spinach if preferred, although they do contribute a good amount of nutrients. Use plant based milk and protein powder to make this recipe vegan friendly.
Equipment
- 1 Food processor (smoothie maker)
Ingredients
- 100 ml Low-fat milk
- 40 g Beetroot (boiled)
- 1 cup Spinach (fresh or frozen)
- 1 scoop Protein powder
- ½ cup Frozen berries
- 1 tbsp Peanut butter
- ½ Banana
- 5 Ice-cubes
To Serve
- 1 tsp Shelled hemp
- 1 tsp Desiccated coconut
- 10 g Dark chocolate (grated or chopped)
- 2 tbsp Pecan nuts (Walnuts or Hazelnuts work too)
- 10 Blueberries

Instructions
- Add the milk, beetroot and spinach to a food processor and blitz for 1 minute.
- Stop, remove the lid and add the protein powder, frozen berries. peanut butter, banana and ice cubes. Blitz for a further 2 minutes until thick and smooth.
- Scrape into a bowl and top with the hemp seeds, coconut, nuts, chocolate and blueberries.
